Tavora Trip
On Wednesday 19th September Room 14 heading out to Tavora Reserve near Palmerston to work with the Yellow Eyed Penguin Trust for our community services day. We spent the morning planting native Pikau plants and Cooks scruvy plants. Anita from the Yellow Eyed Penguin trust and Leith the ranger talked to us about the impact early settlers had on the coast line by clearing the forests for farmland. They also introduced pests such as ferrets, stoats, cats and dogs which still attack the penguin chicks. The Trust has bought the land and trying to replant into native forest and native grasses on the dunes. We then went for a walk over the bluff and around the reserve. The weather was fantastic and it was an awesome day out. We helped plant over 1000 seedlings and learnt alot about the impact we have on the environment and how we can make a difference.

Term Three is nearly over!!
This week we have started off with our Year 8 semi final speeches. It was great to listen to such high quality presentations and we look forward to the finals on Friday. From puberty, chickens to fair trade they were both informative and entertaining. Well done to everyone and good luck for Friday especially to Josie representing our class.
On Wednesday we also head out to Tavora to do our annual community services day planting with the yellow eyed penguin trust. This looks like it will be an awesome day with the weather better than the snow of last week!! Don't forget your trowels everyone!!!
Last Friday was the Otago schools cross country here at Balmacewen. Well done to the whole team who again won the team trophy and a special well done to Nicole who got 3rd in the Year 8 girls!
This week there is also excitement building for our DISCO!!!! Make sure on Thursday night you wear your best glow in the dark outfits!
Good luck to the above Year 8 finalists in the speech competition.

Busy times!!
This week has been very busy in Room 14. We have completed our persuasive writing unit with our final piece addressing the issue - Should energy drinks be banned for children under 18? We spent some time researching this issue after reading an article about the amount of caffeine and sugar they contain. We watched some youtube clips and everyone also researched for some facts to support their opinions.
We have also finished our energy posters looking at the pros and cons of different forms of energy. Well done to Laura who won the electocity creating competition and Lachie who was a close second. Now we are working on our Inquiries - everyone has chosen an area of interest and developed their questions to investigate. There are many interesting inquries underway including the making of a movie about the plight of the albatross, making an eco friendly home, developing an edible garden for the foods room, looking at water pollution in the Leith, making an e-book on the yellow eyed penguin, and some trying to make a wind turbine model.
